    After earning AVCA first-team All-America honors, Nebraska junior Gina Mancuso has been named a second-team All-American by Volleyball Magazine.

    Taylor Simpson, a reserve outside hitter on the Nebraska volleyball team, has left the program and appears to be planning to transfer to the Huskers' former Big 12 rival, Kansas State. "Taylor Simpson informed us over break that she would like to pursue another option and has made the decision to no longer be a part of the Nebraska volleyball program," NU coach John Cook said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.

    A pair of Husker athletes, fullback Tyler Legate and middle blocker Jordan Wilberger, will join Gov. Dave Heineman for a 30-minute wellness walk through the capitol on Wednesday beginning at noon. Nebraskans are invited to join in the walk, which begins in the second-floor rotunda, or replicate it in their own worksite or hometown.     There was a time when the mention of Nebraska volleyball moving out of the historic NU Coliseum and into the Devaney Center was regarded as blasphemy. Coach John Cook would have been the first to put a bar of soap in the mouth of anyone who suggested his team take over the facility when the Husker men's and women's basketball teams move into the new Pinnacle Bank Arena in 2013.

    Nebraska found itself in an unusual position when the final AVCA poll was released Tuesday. The Huskers were ranked 12th after a second-round NCAA tournament loss to Kansas State, finishing outside the top 10 for the second time in 12 seasons. It marked Nebraska's lowest final ranking since it finished the 2003 season at No. 13.

    Among the advantages the Nebraska volleyball program will gain when the Huskers move to the Devaney Center in a couple years will be more space to honor the program's impressive list of All-Americans. That class grew by four Wednesday when the American Volleyball Coaches Association named a quartet of Huskers to its All-America teams, headlined by junior outside hitter Gina Mancuso, who was named to the 14-member first team for the first time in her career.

    Nearly two weeks ago, the brackets for this year's NCAA volleyball tournament were released. And in a rite of winter that is starting to become as regular as the Midwest's frigid December temperatures, coaches exploded in outrage. The most glaring source of their ire lay in the Honolulu Regional, where the top three teams in the coaches poll — USC, Nebraska and Hawaii — were all in the same bracket.

    New conference, off-court distractions wore on NU

    It was unseasonably quiet around the Nebraska volleyball offices this week. Typically this has been the week where the Huskers prepared for regional-round opponents standing between them and the final four, while simultaneously trying to balance the chaos of impending finals. But this year's team can prep for final exams in peace. Not that they're excited about it.

    NU’s Mancuso earns all-region honors

    Nebraska junior Gina Mancuso was named to the Mideast Region first team, while sophomore Morgan Broekhuis, junior Lauren Cook and junior Hannah Werth were named honorable mention by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Mancuso, a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten pick, led Nebraska in kills with 407, ranking in the top 10 in the conference. She averaged 3.60 kills and 2.66 digs per set. Mancuso notched at least 10 kills in 25 matches this season, while posting a career-high of 24 kills...

    Long third set turns tide as Wildcats end NU's season

    Perhaps nobody but the Kansas State volleyball team believed the Wildcats had a chance Friday night in their NCAA tournament match at second-ranked Nebraska. But coach Suzie Fritz's squad pulled off the shocker, outlasting the Huskers in five sets in front of a stunned 4,161 at the NU Coliseum. The win lifts the unranked Wildcats into regional play next week in Honolulu while Nebraska's season ends abruptly at 25-5.

    It didn't take Nebraska coach John Cook long to pinpoint what went wrong for his second-ranked Huskers Friday night in a stunning home loss to unranked Kansas State. "It was a high error night for us," he said. "We didn't pass well, and our first contact was inconsistent." Serving was a problem for NU, which finished with two aces and 11 service errors. Nebraska also hit .238 in the final set while the Wildcats hit .357 to close the match in five.
