Mavericks drop finale in 11 innings

ROCHESTER, Mich. — The University of Nebraska at Omaha lost its sixth straight game, falling 5-4 in 11 innings Sunday to future Summit League foe Oakland (Mich.).

Tim Ryan’s one-out RBI single to center scored Trent Drumheller with the winning run in the 11th inning as the Mavericks dropped to 11-30.

Freshman Alex Mortensen went 3 for 6 while Scotty Donner, Caleb Palensky and Joe Mancuso had two hits apiece. Donner also scored once and drove in a run.

Russell Luxton (2-4) got the win, striking out two in the final inning of hitless relief. Curtis Smith (2-4) took the loss, allowing one run on three hits in the final 3 2⁄3 innings.

UNO had leads of 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning and 3-1 in top of the fifth inning, but couldn’t put Oakland away. The Mavs took a 4-2 lead on Donner’s triple in the seventh but the Golden Bears answered in the bottom half of the inning.

With the bases loaded, Ian Yetsko was hit by a pitch and Aaron Cieslak hit a sacrifice fly to tie it.

UNO returns to action Friday, traveling to Indiana State for a four-game series.
