Jim Meier has a dream — that young people would invite military members and veterans to Salute Our Military Community events on May 18.
Those young people would even get free tickets for themselves and their guest.
The Veterans in Business Forum and Creighton University annually team up to honor and remember the fallen, veterans, active-duty members and their families.
This is the third year for the salute, which is Meier's brainchild.
Salute Our Military Community is tied to the Creighton University-Wichita State University baseball game at TD Ameritrade Park.
Pregame activities will begin at 6:45 p.m. with a flyover, paratroop drop and display of a 30-by-60-foot U.S. flag.
After the 7 p.m. baseball game, Echo Taps will honor Nebraska and western Iowa service members who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of their family members will be in the stands. A fireworks show will conclude the evening.
Retired Senior Master Sgt. Jimmy Weber will sing patriotic songs before, during and after the game.
There are two ways to get tickets.
They are $10 each at Ticketmaster or the Creighton University Ryan Athletic Center ticket office, 19th and Webster Streets.
Six free tickets can be yours if you are a veteran, current service member or a family member of either of these or if you bring a veteran, current service member or member(s) of their family. To obtain the free tickets, you must have a hard copy of a Family Pass.
Another aspect of the salute is a private dinner for Nebraska and Iowa Families of the Fallen — those whose loved ones died in military service. The dinner lets them know their lost loved one is not forgotten, Meier said.
The owners of Union Pizzeria & Sports Bar donate the food, but there are other costs. Tax deductible contributions can be made two ways.
