Crab Shack opens April 2

Omaha's first Joe's Crab Shack is slated to open April 2.

The restaurant is at 701 N. 102nd St. in the former Brick House location. The phone number is 402-391-2701.

Ponzu Sushi already open

Ponzu Sushi & Grill is now open in Aksarben Village.

The restaurant, described as a "nouveau American fish house," combines cutting-edge food with contemporary architecture. The restaurant is at 2110 S. 67th St., and the phone number is 402-614-7757.

The owners of Ponzu also operate Jimi D's Food and Spirits, on the south side of 63rd and Center Streets, also in the Ak-Sar-Ben area.

Catfish Kitchen opens Friday

Cat Daddy's Catfish Kitchen is opening Friday at 71st Street and Ames Avenue.

Greg Cutchall, president of Cutchall Management, said Famous Dave's had been in that location, but it lost business after the company opened its newest Famous Dave's at 131st Street and West Maple Road.

"With five metro locations of Famous Dave's," he said, "we simply overbuilt the market."

Cat Daddy's menu includes items such as fried catfish, cod and shrimp, rib tips and po' boy sandwiches. A section of the menu called "Fished Out" includes nonfish items such as chicken-fried steak, chicken-fried chicken and chicken and waffles.

The restaurant will have indoor and outdoor seating, as well as takeout.

More Dunkin' Donuts

A second locally owned franchise operation of Dunkin' Donuts plans to operate nine stores in Omaha and Lincoln, with the first to open in 2013.

QSR Services, led by attorney Bryce Bares, will open the restaurants.

Earlier this year, Savourex Corp., led by led by former University of Nebraska football players Kris Brown and Zach Wiegert, announced they were working with Jeff Woodbury, a principal of Woodbury Corp., and David Scott, CEO of Tetrad Corp., to open another set of Dunkin' Donuts restaurants.

Savourex plans restaurants in Omaha, Council Bluffs, Columbus, Norfolk and South Sioux City in Nebraska, and Sioux City, Shenandoah and Red Oak in Iowa.

The first Savourex restaurant will open in 2013 and the remainder by 2020.

Dunkin' Donuts serves coffee, frozen and iced beverages and a full assortment of pastries including donuts, bagels, muffins and breakfast sandwiches, and an all-day menu with sandwiches, hash browns and buttermilk biscuits.

The chain has more than 10,000 restaurants in 32 countries worldwide. In 2010, its global sales totaled $6 billion.

Scotch event at Brix

Single Malt Saturday is back at Brix, 225 N. 170th St.

The restaurant and bar will have a tasting of 16 single malt scotches from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The samples include Aberfeldy 12 year, Aberlour 12 year, Auchentoshan 12 year, Balvenie 14 year Caribbean Cask, Bowmore 12 year, Glenmorangie Artein, Glenmorangie Lasanta, Glenmorangie Nectar D'Oro, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, Isle of Jura Superstition, Longmorn 16 year, Old Pultney 12 year, Scapa 16 year, Speyburn 10 year, Strathisla 12 year and the Glenrothes Select Reserve.

Admission to the event is $10. All money raised from admission fees will be donated to Food Bank for the Heartland.

'Too Many Cooks'

This Sunday, a group of Omaha chefs is cooking to raise money to feed the hungry and support culinary scholarships.

"Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen" features chefs from Bellevue Medical Center, Le Voltaire, Liberty Tavern, Lot 2 Restaurant and Wine Bar, M's Pub, Ryan's Bistro, Twisted Fork, Sodexo, Spencer's for Steaks and Chops, Stokes, Vivace and Zurlo's Bistro Italiano.

The event is at Hilton Omaha, 1001 Cass St.

Each chef will cook for 10 people, creating a six-course tasting menu with wine pairings, said Bobby Mekiney, chef at M's Pub and Vivace, who is chairman of the event.

The chefs don't know what they will be cooking until that night. A representative from each group of 10 diners will draw a chef's name.

"With 14 chefs, 14 sous chefs, a number of culinary students and two waiters per table, it's almost like an explosion of dinner service happening all at once," Mekiney said.

The event raises money for the Omaha Restaurant Association. The money will support culinary scholarships and the Omaha Food Bank.

"It's also a great chance for the chefs to get together and talk about stuff like trends and local farmers," Mekiney said.

Tickets for the dinner are $100 per person and can be purchased at www.dineoutomaha.com or by calling the association at 402-493-4739.

'Steak and Cake'

Sullivan's Steakhouse has a "Steak and Cake" special beginning in April.

The special includes a jumbo lump crab cake, a new item on the menu, served with a wedge or Caesar salad and an 8-ounce filet for $39.

The restaurant's patio now is open for lunch, dinner and happy hour.

Sullivan's is at 222 S. 15th St. in downtown Omaha.
