DES MOINES — Former Supreme Court Justice David Baker, ousted from the court for his vote in a 2009 decision legalizing same-sex marriage, has been elected to a commission that recommends finalists for judicial openings.
The Iowa State Bar elected Baker to the 6th Judicial District Nominating Commission, which interviews candidates and picks finalists for judicial openings. The Iowa State Bar elects half of the commission members and the others are chosen by the governor.
Baker, along with Justices Marsha Ternus and Michael Streit, were ousted by voters in the 2010 election.
Bob Vander Plaats headed the effort to remove the judges. He said Friday that he's not concerned about the selection of Baker for the commission.
