Huskers rally to stun No. 8 Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. — Nebraska overcame a six-run deficit and scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, upsetting No. 8 Arizona 11-10 at the Kajikawa Classic Friday evening.

Junior Courtney Breault delivered a two-out walkoff single with the bases loaded in the seventh, driving a 1-2 pitch into right field and scoring sophomore Taylor Edwards.

The 21st-ranked Huskers (2-1) then carried the momentum into the nightcap.

They fell behind 4-0 to Idaho State (1-2), but brought 15 batters to the plate and scored nine runs in the fourth inning. NU cruised to a 12-4 run-rule win in five innings.

The comeback against Arizona (1-2) earlier Friday also started in the fourth, after the Wildcats had taken a 6-0 lead. NU junior Gabby Banda hit a grand slam that trimmed the Wildcats' lead to 6-5. One inning later, the Huskers tied it when Edwards scored on a wild pitch.

Two singles by senior Ashley Guile and Breault accounted for three more runs in the sixth to give NU a 9-6 advantage.

Senior Ashley Hagemann couldn't hold the lead, though. She struck out seven, but allowed 11 hits, walked three and hit two batters.

In the seventh, after surrendering a solo home run — the third long ball of the day for right fielder Lini Koria — Hagemann gave up a bases-clearing double to center fielder Hallie Wilson. The three-run hit with two outs gave Arizona a 10-9 lead.

Then sophomore Tatum Edwards tied the score 10-10 with a one-out single. After junior Brooke Thomason struck out, Breault came through with the game-winner.

Nebraska had lost 11 straight games against Arizona.

The Huskers have matchups with Cal State Northridge and Oregon State set for Saturday. Action begins at 10 a.m. CST.
