DES MOINES (AP) — A House panel has approved a measure that would effectively end greyhound racing in Iowa.
Rep. Kevin Koester, an Ankeny Republican, said the bill ends the requirement for casinos to subsidize the prizes for the races. He said that would result in owners not running dogs at tracks in Council Bluffs and Dubuque.
A House state government subcommittee unanimously approved the measure Wednesday. It now goes to the House State Government Committee, where Koester expects it to be amended to conform with a version approved by a Senate panel earlier this month.
The Senate version would end greyhound racing but require the casinos to pay the state $70 million to do so.
Both Koester and his Senate counterparts are unsure of the bill's prospects for becoming law.
