Raise proposal for sens. advances

By Joe Duggan
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LINCOLN - A legislative committee advanced a resolution Thursday to ask Nebraska voters to give state senators a $10,500 raise.

The Executive Board advanced a resolution introduced by Omaha Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh for consideration by the full Legislature, after amending the measure to reduce the proposed salary from $32,000 to $22,500.

Nebraska lawmakers currently earn $12,000 per year plus expenses, which ranks among the lowest compensation packages in the nation. Voters last raised the salary 24 years ago.

If the Legislature approves the raise, the issue would be decided by voters in November's general election because it requires a change to the Nebraska Constitution.

The raise would take effect Jan. 1, 2013.
