Lewis leads No. 3 Monarchs to overtime win

Spencer Lewis scored 27 points, including a crucial three-point play in overtime, to lift No. 3 Papillion-La Vista to a 61-55 win over No. 9 Lincoln Southeast on Tuesday night at Papio.

After Southeast's Ryan Sievers scored the Knights' lone point of overtime off a free throw with 2:19 left, Lewis and senior guard Trey Moore took over.

Lewis stripped 6-foot-4 Knight center BJ Day under the Southeast basket and hit Moore on the outlet. Lewis then hustled down the left side of the court, took the pass back from Moore and went strong to the hoop for the go-ahead bucket and foul.

He hit the free throw for the 57-55 lead, and Evan Drake and Brett Dougherty added two free throws each in the final 30 seconds.

“We knew going in they were going to try to take Brett away and take Trey away,” Papillion-La Vista coach Jason Ryan said. “We thought Spencer had an opportunity to have a big game, and he produced.”

Moore and Dougherty, along with Lewis, make up Papio's top three scorers this season. Even facing heavy pressure, Moore scored 10 points and Dougherty finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The game featured 13 lead changes, including eight in the fourth quarter.

Papio (16-2) led 44-36 with a minute left in the third quarter before Southeast (13-6) went on a nine-point run to take a 45-44 lead with 4:20 left in regulation.

“Give Southeast credit, they didn't panic,” Ryan said. “I think they're playing as well as anybody.”

Lewis then scored eight of the Monarchs final 10 points, including a 3-pointer with 1:14 left to give Papio a two-point lead.

Southeast answered with a bucket from Dylan Dragoo to tie the game 54-54 with 1:02 left.

The Monarchs held the ball for the last minute for the final shot. Moore took a short, off-balance jumper from the upper right side of key that trickled around the rim and fell away.

“We're 4-0 in overtime right now,” Ryan said. “To be 16-2 with four games left is a tribute to our kids.”

While Ryan will tell you his team is looking to Friday night's home game against Omaha Northwest (3-15), Lewis tipped his hand that the Monarchs are focused on Saturday's matchup against No. 1 Omaha Central (21-0).

Lewis transferred from Bellevue East when Ryan took the Papio job and Moore came from North Platte when his father, Dan, took the assistant position.

“Ever since Trey and I moved, we've been ready for this game,” Lewis said. “That's who we came here for.”
