Woman sentenced in fraud case

The Associated Press

A 36-year-old Omaha woman accused of running a bank fraud ring using checks stolen from the mail has been given four years in federal prison.

A news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg said Krista Swanson was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Laurie Smith Camp. Swanson also is known as Crystal Wilhelm.

Gilg's office says Swanson led a five-member gang that stole checks from the mail, altered them and made fake identification documents to match the checks. The checks then would be deposited in part, with the remainder returned in cash to the gang member.

Two of the gang members have been sentenced to two years in prison. Two were given a year.
