The Omaha City Council on Tuesday approved the purchase of 130 new Panasonic cruiser cameras for the Omaha Police Department.
The purchase will let the department replace its broken-down set of camera equipment. Turn Key Mobile Inc. won the $1. 9 million contract. The council vote was 7-0.
Last month, the council shifted $1.13 million in funding to the Police Department so it could buy new equipment. The extra $63,000 for the cameras will come out of the department's operating budget.
The department expects most of the cameras to be in place by the end of March.
Several people concerned about police misconduct urged the council to approve the purchase.
"Our ultimate goal is to protect our officers and the citizens," Assistant Police Chief Elizabeth Davis said.
