G.I. woman, 72, dies in crash

GRAND ISLAND — A 72-year-old Grand Island woman died as a result of a traffic accident Monday morning, according to the Grand Island Police Department.

Authorities were withholding the woman’s name until they could notify her family.

According to the Police Department, the fatal accident took place about 9:35 a.m. at Highway 281 and 13th Street and involved a semitrailer and a sport utility vehicle.
The semi was traveling south on Highway 281 and the SUV was traveling west on 13th Street.

As a result of the accident, the control box for the traffic signals at that intersection was sheared off. Later Monday there was a four-way stop at the intersection as the traffic lights were still not working. According to the Nebraska State Patrol, the driver of the 2004 Suzuki Vitara SUV ran a red light and was struck by the semitrailer. The woman was taken to St. Francis Medical Center. — World-Herald News Service
