COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — Shortly after resigning because of health concerns, the former mayor of Humphrey has died.
Paul Duesman with the Duesman Funeral Chapel said Don Zavadil died last Thursday.
Zavadil was entering the final year of his first four-year term when he resigned Jan. 16.
Alan Eisenmenger, who took over as mayor of the northeast Nebraska town, said Zavadil was a good leader and friend.
Zavadil grew up in Humphrey and served his hometown in a variety of roles. He was police chief from 1972-77. Then he and his wife bought the Humphrey Democrat newspaper from his parents, and Zavadil served as editor until his death.
Zavadil served on the city council from 1980-84 and 2004-08. And he was rescue captain with the Humphrey Fire Department.
