A pickup crash near Smithland, Iowa, killed a Sioux City couple after they spent a night out with friends and family, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Investigators believe the wreck that killed Jamie Anderson, 36, and Jestaine Olsen, 25, took place early Wednesday, but they are unsure because it was not discovered until after dawn.

“We're speculating sometime after midnight, early morning hours,” said Sgt. Jim Wissler of the Iowa State Patrol. “A passer-by called it in as it started getting light.”

The crash was one of at least three unrelated fatal crashes within about 48 hours in northwest Iowa.

Also on Wednesday, a woman was flown to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha after a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 30 near Missouri Valley. Further information would not be available until Thursday morning, said Harrison County Sheriff Patrick Sears.

The crash that killed Anderson and Olsen occurred as Anderson drove a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup westbound on Old Highway 141. He lost control and the Ford rolled numerous times, coming to rest on its top in a frozen farm pond, according to the State Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation. It occurred less than a day after 29-year-old Benjamin R. Monk of Ute, Iowa, crashed into the back of a stopped semitrailer truck near Charter Oak, Iowa, less than 30 miles away.

On Monday, Nino Segura, 18, of Sioux City was pronounced dead at a local hospital after an sport utility vehicle he was a passenger in left a county road and rolled over in a pasture just northeast of the city.
