What happened in the Midlands on this day? Here's a sampling from the World-Herald archives.
CRACKING DOWN ON LITTER
Feb. 1, 1961: Police Chief Harold Ostler called on cruiser policemen to crack down on anyone seen throwing litter from a car. "We've got a good start on the anti-litter campaign," he said, "and we certainly do not want to let up on it." His comment came after a check of records showed only four private-car litter arrests had been made since the new anti-litter ordinance was passed in October. The ordinance called for maximum penalties of a $500 fine, six months imprisonment or both.
1937: A bill that would take approximately $92,000 of gas tax money away from Douglas County and give it to the City of Omaha for boulevard and street cleaning and repair work was to be introduced in the state legislature by Sen. Charles T. Tvrdik of Omaha. The bill was expected to start a brisk battle between city and county.
1994: Using state cigarette tax revenues to help pay for building a stadium may be one way to help a group of local investors bring a Canadian Football League expansion team to Omaha, Douglas County Commissioner Steve Rosenblatt said. Rosenblatt, who had met several times with city officials and the private investors about the team, said that perhaps it is Omaha's turn to benefit from state cigarette taxes — just as Lincoln did when the Bob Devaney Sports Center was built. "It would not be out of line to go to the Legislature for some sort of funding with the cigarette tax," Rosenblatt said. He told the County Board that it may not be possible to build a stadium without using tax money.
2002: The Elkhorn Public Schools planned to host a public meeting to discuss the possibility of a school-city partnership to build an indoor swimming pool and community center. "It might be a conversation starter or it might be a conversation stopper," Superintendent Roger Breed said. The idea had been floated several times since the school district first brought it up in 1992, but it sank because the city and school couldn't find financing, Breed said.
