NORMAL, Ill. — Illinois State improved its string of Missouri Valley Conference home wins to 20, breaking Creighton’s three-game winning streak with a 79-66 victory Sunday afternoon.
The Redbirds, who improved to 10-8 overall and 5-2 in the Valley, used a career performance by Katie Broadway to hold off the Bluejays. Broadway shot 12 of 17 from the field and finished with 29 points.
Creighton fell to 9-9 overall and 3-4 in the Valley.
Illinois State, which shot 54.1 percent for the game, jumped to a 21-point lead four minutes into the second half with a 13-1 run. Creighton, led by Carli Tritz’s 18 points, cut the lead to 11 but was unable to get any closer.
Tritz started the game cold but came to life in the second half, making her final eight field goals after starting the game 1 for 7.
The Bluejays were also victim to a Redbird run in the first half that led to an 11-point halftime deficit.
Trailing by one with six minutes until intermission, Creighton was outscored 14-4 to end the half.
Though Illinois State outrebounded the Bluejays 35-32, Creighton’s Sarah Nelson, a sophomore out of Omaha Westside, had a game-high 10 rebounds to go with 10 points for her sixth double-double of the season.
Taylor Johnson had 10 points and McKenzie Fujan added a career-high six assists for the Bluejays.
Creighton returns home for four straight Valley games, starting Friday night against Northern Iowa.
