Omaha Fashion Week producer Brook Hudson shares her thoughts on red-carpet etiquette. No matter the situation, remember three words: respect, consideration and honesty.
"If you approach everyone and every situation with those intentions," she said, "you can't go wrong!"
Now for a few specifics:
1. Smile before you ever hit the red carpet (or at least look pleasant). You never know when your picture might be taken. You need to be "on" before you arrive.
2. Wear something other than black if you can. Get creative with your look and don't be afraid to stand out.
3. If you really like what someone is wearing, tell them. But be specific and honest. No generalizations, like "You look great." Instead, say, "I love those earrings. What a beautiful accent to your dress!"
4. If you can't remember someone's name, here are a few options. Either admit it and apologize, then commit it to memory. Say it's nice to see you! What's new since we last talked? Or be pre-emptive. Stick out your hand for a shake and introduce yourself to everyone. Most likely they will respond with their own introduction without a thought.
5. Ladies, when taking a picture, remember to suck, tuck, roll and pivot. In other words, keep your core tight, rear end tucked under, shoulders back and down and most importantly, angle your hips at a 45-degree to the camera lens and your shoulders straight on to create an hourglass look.
