Lincoln Children’s Zoo plans ‘Sensory Safari’
The Lincoln Children’s Zoo’s 10th anniversary “Sensory Safari” will have two sessions on Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The special day is for anyone any age who is blind or visually impaired. Visitors will be encouraged to touch, smell and hear the exhibits, which wildlife experts will explain at stations set up around the zoo.
Zoo memberships don’t apply. Everyone attending the tours will be charged $2 at the gate. Pre-registration is needed by Monday. Register by visiting www.ncecbvi.org. Click on Sensory Safari under the Student & Family Support Programs tab.
Explorer police post sets Kickoff Nights
Pondering a career in law enforcement? The Omaha Police Department will have its Explorer Kickoff Nights at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
The sessions will acquaint high school students and their parents with OPD Explorer Post 591. The program’s goal is to teach students about what’s necessary for a career in law enforcement through classroom instruction and hands-on experience.
Attend only one session, both of which will be at the Northwest Assembly, 10245 Wiesman Drive (north of Fort Street on 103rd Street). A $35 participation fee is required when the student registers for Explorers.

Omaha recruiting VISTA workers
Omaha Serves, the City of Omaha’s community service initiative, is seeking individuals for the AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) program.
The volunteers will work in these service areas: at-risk youths, neighborhood restoration or nonprofit capacity building. The participants will receive a modest living allowance and be asked to make a one year commitment.

Lifelong learners invited to sessions
The Lifelong Learning Initiative at the University of Nebraska at Omaha will have two open-house sessions this weekend.
The initiative provides learning opportunities people age 50 and older. There are no grades or tests.
Saturday’s open house will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Thompson Alumni House, 6705 Dodge St. Sunday’s open house will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at The Center, 714 S. Main St., in Council Bluffs.

Senior care focus of web conference
The nonprofit National Private Duty Association and its Eastern Nebraska Chapter will host a web conference entitled “Home Safe Home: Making Informed Senior Care Decisions.”
It will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 23. The live and interactive program, which will provide advice on hiring a home care provider, is free and open to the public.

Taekwondo tour starts at Bellevue East
The American Taekwondo Association’s next tour will start Saturday in Bellevue.
The Songahm Vision Tour will be at Bellevue East High School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Numerous special guests will attend, including eighth degree Chief Masters Robert Allemier, William Clark and Richard Reed.
The association, the world’s largest martial arts organization, was founded in 1969 in Omaha.
