Numerous events are planned to mark Latino Heritage Month 2010. Here is a sampling of events that are free and open to the public.
Saturday
There will be live entertainment for the whole family in the Plaza de la Raza, 24th and N Streets, from 5 p.m. to midnight. At 10 p.m., there will be fireworks and mariachi music.
Sunday
The Mexican Bicentennial Parade will run from 10 a.m. to noon, based at 24th and N Streets.
Wednesday
A Latino Heritage Cultural Fair will run from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Room and Ballroom on the second floor of the Milo Bail Student Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Thursday
The Dancing Gauchos from Argentina will perform from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Metropolitan Community College’s South Omaha Campus, in the Conference Center.
Elsewhere, three to four dances will be taught at a noon to 1:30 p.m. Latino Dance Workshop in the Nebraska Room at UNO’s student center.
Sept. 20
Dr. Miguel Ceballos of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will discuss health disparities among Mexican populations and the process of migration and acculturation in the United States. His talk will run from 11 a.m. to noon at Metropolitan Community College’s Fort Omaha Campus, Building 10, Room 136 B, C and D.
Sept. 23
The movie “Walkout” will be screened at 11:30 a.m. in the Nebraska Room of the UNO student center. Discussion will follow.
Sept. 28
UNO’s Latino Heritage Month Talent Show will take the stage from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. in the Ballroom and Nebraska Room of the UNO student center.
