Property tax credit to shrink again

By Paul Hammel
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

LINCOLN — Homeowners and farmers will see a slightly smaller check from the state next year to offset property taxes.

The Nebraska Department of Revenue reported Friday that the annual state property tax credit on 2010 taxes due next year will amount to $78.91 for the owner of a $100,000 house or piece of property.

That's down from a $82.22 credit provided this year on 2009 tax bills. An $86.13 credit was given the year before.

The Legislature approved the property tax credit in 2007, but the $115 million-a-year benefit has shrunk during the past three years because the overall state tax base has risen.
