You can price match on something big such as a new bike or something small such as a 20-cent package of Kool-Aid on sale for 10 cents elsewhere.
Here’s how to price-match to save on your grocery bill:
» Find out if your store matches prices. No Frills, Super Saver, Target and Walmart do. Hy-Vee says each store decides, but the new Stonybrook location says it will match.
» Get some specifics. Target requires price-matching items to be identical. Walmart matches on its store brand compared to other generics but will not match percent-off or buy-one-get-one-free deals.
» Find the deals. Gather the weekly grocery ads from The World-Herald’s Food Express and inserts in the Sunday paper. Before heading out, circle the best deals or make a list. Prices typically must be from local competitors on current ads, not from special Internet deals.
» Shop and save. Take the printed ads with you. Separate the price-match items in your cart and at the checkout. Tell the clerk you’d like to price-match. You’ll probably have to show the ad. Clerks occasionally will let you in on the deals you’re missing.
