O'Sullivan, Rooney appear for ‘Boys Town' premier
Sept. 10, 1938: Maureen O'Sullivan and Mickey Rooney were packing to return to Hollywood after appearing in Omaha for the premier of “Boys Town.” While in town, O'Sullivan, a former Sacred Heart student, also visited Duchesne college.
1926: A Council Bluffs jokester cost a Griswold farmer one of the hogs he was hauling to the South Omaha market. As the farmer and his load of pigs approached Pearl Street and Fifth Avenue, a would-be hog caller emitted an ear-piercing “phoo-oo-oo-ee.” The call lured one of the pigs over the side of the truck. The pig broke its neck when it hit the pavement. Perhaps not coincidentally, the world championship hog-calling battle was being held at the Omaha auditorium.
1984: Letters from the parents of the two boys John J. Joubert admitted killing were read during Joubert's sentence hearing. The parents asked the three-judge panel to consider the death penalty.
1996: First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton visited Sioux City to learn how an intervention program had curbed youth gangs in the town. Clinton was campaigning for her husband's re-election.
