    Breakfast leftovers

1:45 p.m.: Nebraska offensive coordinator Shawn Watson spoke Friday at the Big Red Breakfast. You can read about the meat and potatoes portion of what he said in our story, but here are a few extra portions.

Watson talked about each of his quarterbacks. After heaping praise on starter Taylor Martinez and backup Cody Green, Watson complimented senior Zac Lee for his handling of the No. 3 role.

He also said he’s seen a little bit of the “old Kody Spano” back in the last week, saying Spano – who has undergone a pair of ACL surgeries – had “pop on his ball and he’s able to move around like he hasn’t moved around, honestly since the injury, the first injury.”

Watson said he doesn’t put Spano on the scout field. Instead the sophomore sticks with Watson during practices.

Watson also had plenty of good things to say about Latravis Washington. He called the senior, who moved from linebacker to quarterback and is now playing some on special teams, “the greatest kid ever.”

“He’s the best team player I’ve ever been around,” Watson said.

As for true freshman Brion Carnes, Watson said he has looked “awesome” recently.

Perhaps the most intriguing statement the coach made about any of the quarterbacks came when Watson discussed walk-on Ron Kellogg, a redshirt freshman out of Omaha Westside and last year’s scout team player of the year.

“Ronnie Kellogg will find a way to matter at Nebraska,” Watson said. “Ronnie has a unique ability in the passing game, and he does a great job for us on the scout team. I think he’ll matter somewhere because he knows our offense inside and out. I feel in the future, I can see him being a backup and a guy we can win with.”
