Omaha South put up a good fight Thursday night against Omaha North, although the 34-0 final score wouldn't indicate it.

The Packers, who had won two games in a row for the first time since 2005, fumbled at the goal line late in the first half when North led 21-0.

An interception that Travis Green returned 33 yards for a touchdown to start the second half was another damaging blow.

But South kept the game at Kinnick Stadium from going into running-clock timing mode against the No. 7 Vikings (2-1). Last year, five of South's games ended with the clock running because it was at least 35 points behind.

“I'm very optimistic,'' new Packers coach Kevin O'Donnell said. “It came down to some deep passes, some mistakes. There's a lot of positives we can take from this game.''

North coach Larry Martin also offered encouragement for the Packers.

“They played hard and they're going to keep getting better,'' Martin said. “I was proud of them, being an OPS school, too.''

The Packers (2-1) changed up defenses from what they had been running, Martin said, as did Omaha Central last week when it lost 15-8 to the Vikings.

North also had a new look, running a no-huddle, sometimes hurry-up offense with senior quarterback Chris Tyler.

He threw for 227 yards on 17-of-27 passing, with a 40-yard scoring strike to Terry Grigsby. All but one 2-yard pass came in the first half.

“South was bringing a lot of pressure,'' Martin said, “but we came into this with a game plan we wanted to work on. We need to get better throwing. We did some things OK tonight.''

Tyler threw a red-zone interception to kill North's first drive of the night, but three of the next four drives reached the end zone.

Raecheim Logan-Martin scored twice on short runs, sandwiching Grigsby's touchdown. North capped the scoring in the third quarter with a 14-yard touchdown from 5-foot-6 sophomore Trevon Walker.

South went three-and-out on its first five possessions. It had 9 net yards before Jordan Hendrickson blocked a punt with 3½ minutes left in the second quarter.

The Packers picked up two first downs in reaching the Vikings' 5. Junior quarterback Geronimo Ramirez threw on the next play to Hendrickson, who was stripped of the ball at the goal line. Brandin Bryant had the fumble recovery for North.
