After going 2-1 last weekend in St. Louis, the Creighton volleyball team will look to keep building positive momentum as it hits the road again for Milwaukee.
The Bluejays (3-4) play their final three nonconference matches at the Marquette Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Al McGuire Center. CU will take on Toledo, Marquette and Central Michigan.
At St. Louis’ tournament last weekend, Creighton swept both Wake Forest and the host Billikens. The Bluejays dropped a wild five-set battle against Iowa, with CU denying the Hawkeyes on seven of their eight match-point opportunities.
Kirsten Bernthal Booth said it stung that the Bluejays didn’t capitalize on their chance to win all three matches in St. Louis. But the coach is encouraged by the strides her team has made just two weeks into the season.
“After last year, where we struggled some with confidence,” Booth said, “we’re really trying to stress to our players that when they put it together, they are a very good team. We’ve definitely seen flashes of that, and I think we still have the potential to have a really good season.”
Creighton received a big boost last weekend with the return of standout junior middle blocker Laurel Sanford, who injured her ankle during the Bluejays’ season-opening sweep over San Francisco. Sanford helped CU win five of its final six sets after the Bluejays dropped three of the four matches she missed.
