8:17 p.m.: A few of Nebraska's assistant coaches spoke to reporters as they left the practice field Wednesday, each giving his position-specific opinion of the Huskers' first game.
The general vibe from the NU staff is that it was pleased with the debut against Western Kentucky. But coaches always nitpick. Here are a few of the highlights:
> Receivers coach Ted Gilmore said the wide outs need to run more precise routes than they did Saturday. He said his players came up short on their patterns too often. It wasn't a big deal during the 49-10 win, but it could make a difference down the road, according to Gilmore.
“As these games get closer and tighter, that's going to be huge, especially when we're trying to keep the chains moving,” he said.
> Running backs coach Tim Beck said he thought the offense lost focus a little bit in the second quarter after taking a 21-0 lead. He's stressing to his guys that even the smallest of mistakes can disrupt the rhythm of an entire unit.
“It's just little things,” Beck said. “A step here, a technique there, a read here by the back -- we missed a couple of reads here and there. But for the most part, for a first game, I was pretty pleased.”
> Offensive line coach Barney Cotton liked the way Nebraska's big-bodied boys up front began the season. It seems he was a little more impressed with their performance as run-blockers than what they were able to do in passing situations, though.
“At least it gives us a benchmark,” Cotton said. “For a first game, we did a pretty good job in the running game.”
