    NU vs. WKU: Tom's Takes

    YES SIR, MR. ALLEN

Ndamukong Suh was in the house, but not on the field. Pierre Allen looks like the guy who might replace Suh's energy on defense. The senior defensive end has raised his level, a la Suh last year. He was everywhere. He was even flagged for an unsportsmanlike penalty after leveling quarterback Kawaun Jakes with an aggressive hit. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell fined Allen $500.

    TOUGH SPOT FOR ZAC

Zac Lee, mop-up man? It was a surreal sight, watching last year's starter enter the game with the outcome decided. Is it awkward? Absolutely. But I would expect Lee to handle it with class and, in the meantime, keep competing. It's a long season.

    DEFENSE DENTED

Better defense? Not last night. There were holes in NU's defense, and if DeJon Gomes doesn't make a terrific strip of the ball on the goal line, Western Kentucky scores 17 points on Nebraska. The pass rush wasn't always evident, and the new linebackers had their struggles. Bo Pelini had plenty to be upset about, which had to make the head coach happy. Teams can get complacent after these kinds of wins. Nebraska's defense won't be.
