11 p.m.: Blake Headley, Elijah Tostenson, Quentin Urban and the rest of Millard South were very impressive in Friday's 36-17 thumping of Millard West. It sure looks like the Patriots are a cut above the pack in Class A, but the definitive answer comes with a three-game stretch starting Sept. 17 with Millard North and continuing with Omaha Central and Omaha Creighton Prep. Central is 0-2, but that could be a trap game for the Patriots sandwiched around those games with top-five opponents.
Blair played Elkhorn much better than I anticipated, in fact leading 20-7 at one point, before falling 21-20 in the first game between the Eastern Midlands Conference rivals in three years.
Surprise of the night: Omaha Westside 27, Lincoln Southwest 10. The Warriors picked themselves off the mat after last week's 37-0 drubbing by Millard South and knocked off a ranked team. Westside was only 1-8 last year, too.
Hastings St. Cecilia has Class C-2 already cringing, then the Bluehawks go out and blast Kearney Catholic 42-0. Fourteen straight wins for last year's C-1 winners.
Omaha South (2-0) has a two-game winning streak for the first time since beating Northwest and Creighton Prep in 2005. It makes next Thursday's game with Omaha North (1-1) a little more interesting, although the wins against Northwest and Lincoln High were against teams expected to struggle this season.
