Jokes to stop when big game begins

11:30 p.m.Friday night is the first ratings rumble of the season in Class A -- No. 2 Millard West at No. 1 Millard South -- and Thursday night's Millard North-Burke game found West coach Kirk Peterson in a light mood.
"People are thinking we've been working on all these secret plays,'' he said. "Well, tell them we've gone to a no-huddle offense and Millard South has gone to a huddle offense.''
That's not happening, of course. West will want a control game and Millard South will try to speed it up with its offensive pacing. While this is the fifth meeting between the schools in three years, it's the first for Millard South without Trevor Longe, now the head coach at Elkhorn South, calling the Patriots' plays. Head coach Andy Means has taken over that duty.
Remember that Millard South is the home team and will use the west stands. Millard West wil have the east bleachers and grassy overflow area to the north.

Other games on my radar for Friday night:

North at Central: 5 p.m. start here. Rivals go all out to avoid being the one that starts 0-2.

Prep at Bellevue West: One last postgame handshake between Tom Jaworski of Prep and John Faiman of West, the only coach older in the Metro than TJ. And Tom lets him know it every time they're at the November meeting to pick all-district teams.

Blair at Elkhorn: After the Antlers' two years in Class A, the conference rivals meet again.

Crete at Omaha Skutt: If you don't want to fight the crowd at Buell, go up 156th Street a mile or so and see Class B's power team in Crete.

McCook at Aurora: State champion Huskies beat McCook twice in 2009.
