Titans knock off Harlan in Hawkeye Ten showdown

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The Council Bluffs Lewis Central volleyball team made it a top goal to win the Hawkeye Ten Conference this fall. It took a big step toward that end Thursday night.

The Titans defeated Iowa Class 3-A No. 8 Harlan 25-18, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, but there were plenty of moments that made the match feel like anything but the season opener that it was for the Cyclones. L.C. came in with a 1-3 record following a tournament in Ames, Iowa, last weekend.

“I think this year you just saw the top two teams in the conference,” Lewis Central coach Dennis South said. “I don’t know if that’s true, but from what I’m seeing, that was probably the best team we’ll see in the Hawkeye Ten.”

Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Means led the victors with 10 kills, one of four Titans with at least five kills. L.C. collected 9.5 team blocks, many of which literally stuffed potential Harlan runs.

Jacie White boomed a match-high 12 kills for the Cyclones, who were swept by their Council Bluffs counterparts last season. They trailed just 15-14 in the opening game but allowed an 8-2 run fueled by three kills from L.C.’s Marlee Price and two service aces from Means.

Harlan also led 7-0 to open the fourth game and held an 18-16 advantage late.

But three more Means kills were part of a 9-2 rally that iced the match — and turned the Hawk-10 race in the Titans’ favor in the early going.

“It was kind of streaky,” Harlan coach Julie DuVal said. “Somebody would go on a run with some really nice points, then it would be somebody else’s mistakes for about 20 minutes. But that’s early season volleyball.”

Setter Jordan Leehy led Lewis Central with 24 assists, while Harlan’s Brooke Leinen turned in 30.
