Pelini: LB Compton out indefinitely with foot injury

6:58 p.m.: Add another name to the list of key Huskers who'll miss a considerable amount of time due to injury.

Coach Bo Pelini said in a statement that linebacker Will Compton suffered a foot injury during the two-hour session Thursday outside the Hawks Center.

Pelini met with reporters after practice Thursday, but didn't mention Compton during the three-minute interview. It appears that the third-year coach chose to wait on some type of medical assessment before publicly commenting on Compton's status.

“Will was injured during practice today. After practice we were able to confirm that he will be out for some time,” Pelini said in a statement e-mailed out to beat reporters Thursday evening. “We have informed his family about the injury, and we will know more about Will's status going forward in the next few days.”

The obvious assumption is that Compton will miss a lengthy portion of the fall. And that's not good news for the NU defense, which already will be without linebacker Sean Fisher for the entire season. Fisher broke his leg during preseason camp.

Lineman Mike Smith (broken leg) and defensive back Anthony Blue (torn ACL) are also out for the year. Tight end Dreu Young (back surgery) is expected to miss at least half the season.

Continuing with injury-related news, Pelini confirmed Thursday that sophomore lineman Brandon Thompson and true freshman defensive tackle Chase Rome will not be healthy enough to play in Saturday's opener. Both players are expected back next week.

As for the ongoing quarterback race, Pelini basically declined comment Thursday. He said those outside the program will have to wait until Saturday to find out the Huskers' plan for that spot.
