New technology
UNO's gigantic new video board and scoreboard beyond the south end zone at Caniglia Field will pique the interest of community sponsors, fans, players and potential recruits. Housed in a structure 53 feet high and 66 feet wide, it has helped take the on-field look of the Mavericks from 1970 to close to contemporary.
Five straight home games
It's hard for a UNO fan not to get excited about the opening five games of the season, all of them at home. It starts with intrastate rival UNK, which upset the Mavs last season and is ranked higher than UNO in preseason polls. Then comes Ouachita Baptist (Ark.), a solid Gulf South Conference team, with only four days of preparation for the Mavs. Next is top-ranked defending national champion Northwest Missouri State in the MIAA opener.
UNO will be good
UNO lost five games last season, but two were away from home by a touchdown or less, another was by 10 points on the road to the eventual national champion and another was on the road after squandering a 20-0 lead in a game the Mavs had to start their backup quarterback. Only once did the Mavs appear outclassed, and Central Missouri can do that to anyone at any time. The point is, that 7-5 season was awfully close to being 10-2, and with so much returning experience, the Mavs could make a move forward.
