New Creighton men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott will face three BCS conference teams and BYU in his first season.
CU will face 12 teams that reached the postseason last year, including three NCAA qualifiers and five NIT squads. The Jays will play Nebraska and Northwestern on the road, Iowa State on a neutral court and BYU at Qwest Center Omaha.
“There is no doubt we will be facing some outstanding programs in both the nonconference and conference portions of our schedule,” McDermott said in a press release. “Playing quality teams is great for our fans and our program, and we are looking forward to the challenge.”
The Bluejays will begin Nov. 4 against Northern State, an NCAA Division II program from Aberdeen, S.D., in CU’s only exhibition.
Creighton will open the regular season with the Global Sports Hy-Vee Challenge starting with home games against Alabama State (Nov. 12) and Northern Arizona (Nov. 14).
Creighton continues its three-game homestand but takes a break from the Hy-Vee Challenge with a Nov. 17 game against Louisiana-Lafayette, its first meeting with the Ragin’ Cajuns since 1977.
The Hy-Vee Challenge continues with a game against McDermott’s former team, Iowa State, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Nov. 21 and a Nov. 26 home game against Kennesaw State.
CU will face Northwestern on the road on Nov. 28 to start a two-year, home-and-home series with the Wildcats. The teams haven’t met since 1964.
BYU then comes to Omaha on Dec 1. The Cougars, who were 17th in the final Associated Press poll last season, will play in Omaha as part of the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge.
On Dec. 5, the Bluejays will take on Nebraska in Lincoln. Following a six-day break, St. Joseph’s will return to Omaha on Dec. 11.
Other nonconference foes include Idaho State, Western Illinois and Samford. Creighton also will participate as a road team in the BracketBusters in February.
Creighton faces two-time defending Valley regular-season and tournament champion Northern Iowa on Jan. 26 in Cedar Falls and on Feb. 26 in Omaha in the regular-season finale before heading to St. Louis for the Valley tournament from March 3 to 6.
