    WOMEN'S SOCCER

    Bluejays rally for victory

LINCOLN — Goals by Claire Zach and Erin Gunther led the Creighton women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Loyola Maryland on Friday in the Nebraska Classic.

It was the first win of the season for the Bluejays (1-1-1).

The Greyhounds scored first when Gianna Mangione put a ball past goalkeeper Alicia Montgomery into the upper right corner of the net eight minutes into the game.

The Jays scored when Zach got the rebound of her shot off the crossbar and headed it into the back of the net. The goal marked Zach’s fourth of her Creighton career, and her first this season. It was also Creighton’s first goal of the regular season.

“We responded well after giving up the early goal today,” coach Bruce Erickson said. “We had a great goal by Claire that really got things going for us.”

The Jays continued to put pressure on the Greyhound defense. After back-to-back shots by Brittney Neumann, Gunther took a center pass from Beth Fyles and scored the fourth goal of her career. It was Fyles’ seventh career assist.

“We just played really well today,” Erickson said. “We had a lot more energy. Plus Brittney Neumann and Emily Orbell worked very well together up front. It was a good win for us.”

The Bluejays will play Sunday at 1 p.m. against Loyola Chicago.
