For Kelsey Pfeffer, it was more like “awe at first sight” when she met Jason Johnson. They were introduced by her best friend, who worked with Jason at a Lincoln bar. Kelsey and Jason hung out, but kept things casual in the beginning. Both had just been in crazy relationships and weren’t ready to date again.
It didn’t take long for Kelsey and Jason to become hooked on each other’s charm. Just when things started to get serious, Kelsey started law school in Omaha. Jason eventually followed Kelsey, and the pair continued to date for what Kelsey said seemed like forever.
Jason eventually popped the question by surprising Kelsey with breakfast, a beautiful ring and an impromptu trip to Kansas City to celebrate.
Kelsey and Jason wanted their wedding to be an adventure. After exploring options, they chose an all-inclusive resort at Mexico’s Riviera Maya. Forty-eight of their closest friends and family joined them at the Moon Palace for their nuptials Feb. 6, 2010.
“We chose Mexico because we thought it would be such an amazing adventure to do something unique,” Kelsey said. “We both love the outdoors, and I have always seen myself getting married on the beach barefoot, which is exactly what we did.”
In fact, everyone in the bridal party was barefoot.
The bride wore a one-shoulder resort gown by Maggie Sottero. Her attendants wore pink and yellow sundresses, and the groomsmen wore linen trousers and shirts.
The women carried fragrant blooms in sunset pink, yellow and orange.
Jason and Kelsey exchanged vows under an azure sky. “We both cried,” Kelsey said, recalling how they were overwhelmed by the beauty of the day and the number of people who traveled to share their special day.
The newlyweds and their guests celebrated with champagne, dinner and a night on the town.
In March, Kelsey and Jason had a tropical-themed reception for 275 at the Omaha Marriott. Red, tangerine, coral, hot pink and yellow flowers captured the essence of Mexico.
Some tables held glass vases with sand and sea shells, while other tables had tall arrangements in warm tropical colors with seashells at the base. Glass vases mounded with exotic flowers graced other parts of the room. White chocolate shells cascaded from the four-tier wedding cake. Each tier was a different color — red, orange, yellow and pink, with flowers ranging from red velvet to chocolate chip and pink champagne.
The candy buffet even had a tropical vibe.
“I wanted a fun, laid-back reception to
represent the wedding we had in Mexico,” Kelsey said.
