$85M in property still unclaimed

LINCOLN (AP) — The state treasurer’s office is seeking to return $85 million in unclaimed property to more than 250,000 Nebraskans.

The office recently publicized the names of people owed money or property and will do so again in the fall. A list of those owed unclaimed property may be found on the office’s Web site.

The office has returned about $43.5 million since 2007.

Under state law, the state treasurer is responsible for handling unclaimed property. Examples include health claim payments, dividends, utility deposits, life insurance proceeds, wages, stocks, outstanding checks, safety deposit boxes and unused gift certificates.

A measure before the state Legislature would have voters decide in November whether to eliminate the state treasurer’s office.
