SIDNEY, Iowa — The Sidney City Council has approved its 2010-11 budget.

Sidney City Clerk Suzie Moores said the coming year's $2.6 million budget is less than the 2009 fiscal year budget by $248,000.

“We're trying to watch all the categories really close, just to monitor them, and be real diligent about costs,” Moores said. “We need to stay on track because we know we're getting less and less (from the state).”

The estimated tax levy per $1,000 valuation on regular property was set at $14.57651; the estimated tax levy per $1,000 valuation on agricultural land was set at $2.99728.

Moores said the tax levy set for the 2009-10 budget was $13.73.

This means the owner of a $70,000 home in Sidney will pay approximately $58 more in taxes this year compared to last year.

Broken down, public safety was allocated $128,811; public works, $173,325; health and social services, $500; culture and recreation, $150,240; community and economic development, $228,590; and capital projects, $614,000.

Sidney officials anticipate receiving $13,550 from licenses and permits; $106,394 from other city taxes; $760,200 from intergovernmental funds, such as federal grants, road use taxes, state grants and local grants; and $457,042 from charges for services such as water and sewer utilities.
