Officials: 5-year-old sets fire

By Andrew J. Nelson

A 5-year-old boy is believed to have been responsible for a fire that started in the back bedroom of a house in Council Bluffs on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

No one was injured in the blaze inside a single-story two-bedroom house at 127 Fleming Ave., which was reported at 4:55 p.m. Everyone who was home at the time escaped safely, according to 911 dispatchers.

Capt. Dale Lee of the Council Bluffs Fire Department said a woman and a child were already outside when firefighters arrived. It took about a half hour to get the blaze under control. Though it was a small home, heavy smoke kept firefighters from locating the fire.

Lee estimated the damage at $50,000 or more.

The house is on the north side of town, about two blocks south of Prospect Park.
