An Omaha man was hurtled through the driver's side window of the car he was driving after another motorist ran a red light and crashed into him Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

The injured man was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition as a trauma center candidate, but, as of Tuesday evening, he was expected to live.

The crash happened about 5:15 p.m. near 48th and Center Streets.

According to police, this is how it happened: A 1991 Ford Escort westbound on Center ran a red light and struck a Mercury Tracer that was southbound on 48th Street and trying to turn east onto Center.

Police cited the driver of the Escort, a Silver City, Iowa, man, on suspicion of running the red light. Officers cited the driver of the Tracer on suspicion of not wearing a seat belt.
