Monograms to the Hilt, Spring/Summer 2009

Kelly Lautenbach knows the difference between ordinary and extraordinary. “It's the little tiny details that people don't take the time to do or simple things in massive quantities,” she says.

The 41-year-old freelance scrapbook designer produced a simple monogram design for daughter Katie's recent wedding to Garrett Schweitzer.

K & G became the focal piece for invitations, programs, photos and reception décor.

The theme started with the couple's engagement photo. Katie and Garrett held a metal ampersand purchased from Pottery Barn.

The reception site was decorated with monograms and other decorative type ordered from Uppercase Living, a home interiors company with representatives nationwide (check out the product catalog at www.uppercaseliving.com).

“It's inexpensive and it's not hard to do, but it's unique,” Kelly said of the rub-on vinyl lettering. “For what we spent, we got a lot of effect.

” A stylized K & G and a large framed photo of the bridal couple graced the dessert table. Giant monograms and enlarged photographs of the couple decorated the hall leading into the reception hall and the walls behind the coffee bar and punch station.

Kelly ordered extra vinyl pieces to spruce up spots on tables that “needed a little something.” A scripted “S,” for example, provided a dramatic touch to a pewter plate at the guest book.

The monogram design came to be a representation of the couple. “By the time guests got to the wedding, they were familiar with the theme because there were bits and pieces of it everywhere,” she said. “When you take something that's simple and repeat it, it becomes something that's you.”
